Six months into the U.S. pilot, ChatGPT advertising has become a broader marketing platform. That does not make every campaign a good investment—or turn independent websites into paid publishers.
OpenAI began testing ads in the United States on February 9. Its August update says tens of thousands of marketers have advertised as the platform added conversion optimization, geographic targeting, custom audiences, the OpenAI Pixel, a Conversions API and third-party measurement.
Who may see an ad
Ads can appear below a response for eligible Free and Go users. OpenAI says Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu remain ad-free, and accounts identified as belonging to people under 18 are excluded.
Does an advertiser see the conversation?
OpenAI says advertisers do not receive chats, history, memories or personal details. Ads may use the current thread and, when enabled, permitted personalization signals kept within ChatGPT. Advertisers receive aggregated reporting.
A disciplined small-business test
- Choose one outcome.
Use a sale, qualified lead or booked appointment.
- Build a dedicated landing page.
Keep the offer, price and geography consistent.
- Cap the budget.
Measure incremental conversions, not views alone.
- Audit measurement.
Exclude sensitive information from URLs and events.
- Check every claim.
A conversational setting does not relax consumer-protection rules.
User controls
Eligible users can turn personalization off, clear ads data, hide or report an ad, or choose an ad-free Free experience with reduced limits where available.
Context can make an ad relevant; only controlled measurement can show whether it creates business value.
